Pacts and Coalitions.

I left the Liberal Party when they formed the Lib-Lab pact. I had already left the Labour Party once in my life. Clearly I had to do so again. I recognised the free-market and libertarian aspects of liberalism but I found later that these were better represented by the Thatcherite wing of the Conservative party.

I see now that 31% of Lib-Dems would make a pact with the Labour party but only 15% with the Conservatives. It seems to me that sometimes the left wing of the Lib-Dems is closer to hard-line Old Labour than it ever is to New Labour.

My own attitudes towards libertarianism have not changed over the years. I do believe in freedom of speech and action, provided that these are not to the detriment of other people. It is the political parties who have changed yet still they seem to be incapable of giving a clear message to the electorate on where they stand. It would be very helpful if the Labour party stuck to the principles of collectivism, the Conservatives stuck to free markets and individualism and the Liberal Democrats stuck to brown rice and muesli.
