Short-Termism

The public see the Conservatives (37%) as more likely than Labour (26%) to put up taxes. They also see the Conservatives (50%) much more likely than Labour (14%) to make the biggest cuts in public services. 25% of people believe that a Conservative election victory would be more likely to tip the economy back into recession but 34% believe that Labour retaining power will result in another downturn.

These figures from YouGov make very depressing reading not simply because of the prospect of another Labour government (and a left-wing one at that) but because it validates the political chicanery of telling the electorate that they can have their cake and eat it.
